Sector Benchmark

Note: Latest GHG and revenue data (based on tradingview.com) are used to calculate GHG emissions intensity by sector. The color scale of each bubble depends on the GHG intensity (GHG emissions per 1 million USD revenue). Sectors follow the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) that organize companies based on their primary business activities. The 11 sectors are : Information Technology, Health Care, Financials, Consumer Discretionary, Communication Services, Industrials, Consumer Staples, Energy, Utilities, Real Estate, and Materials.

SSE plc belongs to the sector Utilities.

Offsets

Last update for SSE by zerotracker.net: Sept. 4, 2024
Planning to use external offset credits Yes
Separate targets for emission reductions and removals No
Conditions on use of offset credits
  • Avoid biodiversity harm
  • Avoid social harm
  • Other conditions
Plans for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) Yes (nature-based and CCS-based removals)

Additional notes: Nature-based carbon removal "SSEN Distribution is proposing to deliver 2,000ha of woodland restoration and 1,200ha of peatland restoration, which is expected to remove over 300,000 tCO2e and provide 3,000 biodiversity units by 2045*" (SSE plc Sustainability Report 2022, pg. 92) * Subject to Ofgem support. UPDATE 2024: "In early 2024, SSE set a new commitment for woodland conservation, that all onshore large capital projects consented from 1 April 2024 onwards will achieve no net loss of native woodland.", with "‘net gain’ in biodiversity on those consented from 2025 onwards" (https://www.sse.com/media/al1dt4qn/sse-plc-sustainability-report-2024.pdf, p.90/47) CCS-based carbon removal "While CCS and hydrogen technologies can significantly reduce emissions associated with electricity generation, to achieve a net zero power system, and economy, it is expected that negative emissions technology will be required to neutralise residual emissions." (SSE plc Sustainability Report 2022, pg. 31) Link to SSE plc Sustainability Report 2022 - https://www.sse.com/media/hbnfdo0q/sustainability-report.pdf "On CCS, SSE are active members of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association and participants in DESNZ’s Power CCUS Expert Group, and we engage regularly with officials and policymakers on issues regarding CCS. For Hydrogen, SSE is an active member of Hydrogen UK and participants in the DESNZ design groups for the hydrogen transport and storage business models." (https://www.sse.com/media/al1dt4qn/sse-plc-sustainability-report-2024.pdf, p.30/17) "New flexible power stations, using technologies like hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS), are expected to replace existing high-carbon flexible power stations. Power stations with CCS will be capable of capturing at least 90% of CO2 emissions associated with power generation, however there are residual emissions that will slightly increase SSE’s scope 1 inventory. SSE is leading a project to increase capture rates to between 95% and 99%, limiting the residual emissions from these new assets.
